Women's Life Stories

Unburied
Author: Drolmatso (Eva)
"If you are gold, no matter how deep you've been buried, people will dig you up someday."...I cannot wait for someone to discover me. Rather, I have to move away the earth that covers me. All my experiences from my childhood until now have impressed upon me the fact that if you want other people to acknowledge your value, you must struggle for it.

Little Woman
Author: Wendedrolma (Wanda)
Her face was bruised and covered with different colors, green and red. Both of her hands were swollen. She filled her bucket with water. I could do nothing for her except cry. I cried loudly in her warm arms. She didn't say anything, stroking my hair with her large swollen hand, and crying herself. A while later, she walked back home unsteadily, carrying a bucket full of water.

Growth
Author: Pagbatso (Cindy)
It is early morning I turn to look at Mother and my sister's bed. I can see my little sister sleeping soundlessly, wrapped in a quilt. Mother is gone. Hearing the yaks moaning, I look at the adobe stove in the middle of the tent. There is no fire. Then I pull up my quilt (mother's old robe) and begin to wonder what Father is doing in town. Does he really have something important to do there?

The More You Know...
Author: Sonamjid (Jessica)
That was the first time I had seen my father cry. His tears moved me; I was sure that he really cared about me because otherwise, how could a man shed such tears? I agreed to go school and a sweet smile appeared on my father's face again. “You will understand me one day," he said proudly.

Nangsa Obum and I
Author: Dawadrolma (Britney)
Difficulties can make people lose their minds. Seeing me, an extraordinarily thin creature who screamed all day long, my father decided to cast me off. My mother had no objection, for the empty house had no space for my eating bowl.

My Hands are Bleeding from the Straw
Author: Renzenji (Caitlyn)
My mother led the five of us to the fields, where we picked up every single grain from among the shoots of straw, which were seven inches high and razor sharp. As we picked up the bits of grain, the straw stabbed our hands until they bled. Adter a full day of work, the five of us gathered only one and half sacks of grain.

I Will Stand Up
Author: Samtsogye (Whitney)
My birth differed from that of other girls in the village because my family wished for a daughter. Most people in the village did not think this way. When a girl was born, most families make the girl stay at home and find a husband as quickly as they can. None of them considered sending their daughters to school

The Fish and the Lake
Author: Chugpilhamo (Aba-Lily)
I was born in a Tibetan nomadic area where very few were educated, and most people did not value education. They usually made their children help them herd livestock, milk, cut yak or sheep-hair, and collect fuel. Thus many children could not get an education. Luckily, my parents were different; they value education highly because their life has been difficult without it.

Poverty, Violence, and Hope
Author: Tserangdrolma (Daisy)
Your grandfather Tashi thinks that you'd better marry the Chinese carpenter. He said life would be much easier for you this way. What do you think?" my mother said painfully. She moved her eyes away from me and pretended to look at the far away mountains . Her expression told me that she was afraid to hurt me and she was anxiously awaiting my answer.
